Posted on April 21st, 2020 by Holly Whitesides

Welcome to the fourth Against the Grain Farmstand where you can pre-order for pick up at either Boone Winter Farmer's Market or at the farm for Saturday, April 25th.  If you're reading this in an email, you'll see the items that we have to offer this week below.  You can simply click on the yellow button "purchase from the farmstand" to reserve a box, make swaps and add extras to the base box that Harvie will put together for you.  If you're reading this in the Harvie platform, navigate over to the "farm stand" to reserve your box.

The ordering period for Saturday pick-up closes at NOON on Thursday, April 23rd.

If you have any questions about your box or the farm stand process, please reach out to Holly directly by email at atgfarm@gmail.com or by phone at 828-406-4439.

In other farm news, the farm is doing its best to plant in the field between the rain events.  We're still planting cool season crops like lettuce, spinach, beets, carrots, arugula and radishes.  At the same time, we're planting some of our hot season crops in our poly tunnels; crops like tomatoes, summer squash and peppers, which won't yield until the peak of summer.  The farm is also having a lot of fun with the wild-harvested ramp season this year.  Ramps are a wild allium, which many folks describe as a cross between a leek and an onion.  Both the bulbs and the leaves are a culinary treat and savored by chefs and home cooks alike.  The farmers and crew have been foraging for ramps in the woods around the farm, which is always a welcome reprieve from field work.  (Don't worry, we are very conscious of our foraging and harvest techniques in order to leave plenty for the future.) Relating to the Earth from the cover of the trees provides a change of scenery for the senses and perspective for the soul.  Trees have a way of comforting and sheltering plant and animal life under their leaves and branches, and humans are no exception.

We'd like to extend a humble "thank you" to all of you who are trialing the new Harvie system along side of the farm.  It's a big learning curve all around, not only for the farmers (like us) and community members (like you) but also for the folks at Harvie.  The Corona virus has created a situation in which software like Harvie is in high demand.  Harvie, like many other businesses, did not anticipate what impact this demand would have, and they are working hard to mitigate the technical issues that have been revealed.

Much love,

Holly, Andy and the ATG Crew
