Common Roots Urban Farm CSA Newsletter #5

Posted on July 6th, 2020 by Terra Dumas

Attention: Roswell Farmer's Market is back on! You can pick up your share at our table in Kaminski Park from 11-1:30.

July is here and, all things considered, it came quick! The weather couldn’t be nicer and every opportunity to enjoy it has to be cherished. Although we are outside every day, it has been nice to get out, away from the farm and enjoy some of the wonderful activities that Western New York has to offer. This past weekend we were able to get down to Eighteen Mile Creek in Derby to do some paddling and exploring. We saw an abundance of wildlife, paddled to the lake, and got to float lazily in the slow moving water. It was a good Sunday.

A funny thing happens in July. Large scale plantings and bed preparation has mostly been completed. Most beds are full and maintenance becomes the main tasks we face. However, every year at this time we experience a lull in harvest yields. Summertime staples such as tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and peppers are just beginning to trickle in and the last of the spring crops are waning in their production, so we find ourselves scrambling to accommodate the deficit. In the past, it has been a cause for stress and anxiety. This year is no different. While estimating numbers in the field this week we found ourselves gawking at the prolific cucumber and zucchini plants with so many flowers soon to be fruit and, at the same time, lamenting the fact we don’t have more available at the moment. Anyway, if your share feels insufficient, we know and we apologize, but soon there will be more variety and quantity. Hold tight! Being a CSA member can be a bit of a roller coaster ride. We hope you’re enjoying it all as it seems to be flying by. Before we know it we will be reminiscing on the season gone by and trying to figure out where the time went! Never fails. (This is a gentle reminder to myself to stay in the moment.) We hope you are staying the moment and finding ways to make the most out of your summer and that our produce can help you enjoy some of the tastes and smells that make this season great. Until next time...

Eat well and enjoy.
