Hi Ya'll
I'm in a time crunch this week so I'll keep the Farm Happening newsletter short and sweet. Here's what's in your box this week:
Cherry Tomatoes: Mostly Jasper red cherries but a few gold nugget cherry tomatoes this week.
Cantaloupe: Finally! These slurpy sweet melons bring a refreshing treat to a hot summer day. This is my favorite variety called Hearts of Gold.
Summer Squash: The squash production is beginning to slow down a bit, but we still have zucchini, yellow crookneck, yellow and green scallop squash, and the 8 ball zuchinni.
Peppers: The shishito peppers are going NUTS in this heat so there are lots of them to share. The jalepeno peppers are also producing well. The hot peppers are delveloping nicely but are all still green. Coming soon are habeneros, paprika, paper lantern red and bell peppers.
Potatoes: You should have seen the expressions on people's faces this weekend at the farm stand. I was surrounded by hundreds of pounds of potatoes we harvested this week and as shoppers asked to buy them, my reply was "They aren't for sale". This is the benefit of being a farm share member. You get first pick, produce is held in reserve for you, and you get the pick of the crop. This week, you'll see the Norland Red potatoes. They are creamy white and have a nice thin skin. Super Yummy for roasting.
Carrots: This is the last of the Parisienne carrots. Tops are cut off and they are bagged loose.
Beets: The tops are cut off these yummy roots and bagged loose this week.
Cauliflower: I still have a few heads left. Simply beautiful but rather large. If it's too much to eat, blanch and freeze it for later
Romanesco: I keep finding more heads of Romanesco while weeding. They just keep appearing so I'll keep sharing!
Strawberries: Our Albion everbearing berries continue to give us a juicy mouthful every day. Enjoy!
Cucumbers: The lemon cucumbers are going CRAZY with the summer heat. I'm sending a few home with you this week. If you haven't tried them before, you are in for a real treat. You don't need to peel them. Just wash the little bumps off and eat them like an apple.
Extras:
- Eggs
- Garlic Scape-Cashew- Pesto
- Salve
- Dried Pepper Flakes
I'll catch up with you on farm activities next week. I'm trying to keep the farm running and get my daughter on the road to college again. She graduates in December. Woo Hoo!
Blessings,
Carrie
