Farm Happenings for June 5, 2019

Posted on May 31st, 2019 by Joanna Winkler

Hi everyone!

This is Joanna writing this week - hope you're all excited about your first CSA boxes like we are! In this section of your weekly email, we'll update you on what's been happening on the farm this week. Only the first two paragraphs pop up, but you can always read the whole thing and find archived happenings on our website on the page Farm News.

This week we got a head start on packing CSA boxes with our preseason warm up share. It was so exciting to see the boxes filled to the brim with delicious food! Around the farm, we started pounding stakes for our outdoor tomatoes so that we can trellis them to keep them upright, accessible and healthy. We also planted watermelon seeds and dry bean seeds. We're trying dry beans (like black beans, cannelini beans and black eyed peas) for the second time this year after learning a lot last year. If all goes well, they should show up in your CSA boxes late this fall, so cross your fingers!

We were also able to tackle some bigger weeding projects this week which felt great. I love the satisfaction of rescuing tiny vegetable plants from big, mean weeds, though ideally we wouldn't let the weeds get that big in the first place. Weed management has a lot to do with timing, and we got a little bit behind this month because we got married a couple of weeks ago :-) We're also better equipped to keep the farm less weedy now that I'm on the farm full time instead of part time. We made this shift in April and we're still amazed at how much we can accomplish with two (often more than) full time people! I'm sure this feeling will change as our harvests continue to get bigger and bigger, but for now two feels like a great number. Perhaps you can chalk it up to newlywed bliss!

Hope you have a great weekend!

Cheers,

Joanna & Bryan
