Autumn Share Week 1!

Posted on October 2nd, 2020 by Bethany Allen

Welcome to fall friends!  It's easy to love fall on a farm, even when the days are wet and a little gray and gloomy as it was today.  Sometimes I even think it's the gloomy days that make it so special.  The sky seems to get bigger in the fall, the clouds get more defined and colorful and we cherish the sunlight more as it starts to dim a little.  This "gloominess" or moodiness of weather is balanced with ALL THE VEGGIES coming to fruition.

We're pretty tired here on the farm.  It has been a challenging season (as it has for so many) to be in business as a small farm.  We feel the weariness, and we can see it in our customers and staff.  Everyone needs a bit of a break from the world.  We've found some respite in cooking and eating together as a family, slowing it down a little and letting our toddler drive the mood.  If I could bottle up the essence of Iona giggles and put them in shares, I would.  I guess broccoli will have to do the trick!

As for what's happening on the farm, a lot of harvest, a bit of planting.  We're about to launch into some BIG harvests - potatoes, sweet potatoes, to have those ready for you in a few weeks.  We're also planting 4 tunnels worth of greens to keep us in kale, spinach, and salads through the winter (weather goddess willing).

Awesome Extras this Week:

-Macintosh Apples from The Apple Farm  in Fairfield - it sounds like it's been a tough year for apples, the drought seems to have hit them particularly hard - so enjoy these Macs while you can!  The Macintosh variety is tender-crisp and a delicious mixture of sweetness and tartness, good for eating and cooking. 2 lb for $4.50  *please note, we offer non-organic products when we cannot find organic and we know and trust the producers, as is the case here, these apples are delicious, grown in Maine by wonderful farmers, but are not certified organic*

-Apple Cider - Fresh pressed and also from The Apple Farm this cider is the real deal.  Eric (who declares himself the "official Mainer" of the family (born and raised in Fryeburg), says it's the best he's ever had.  $6.00/half gallon *please note, we offer non-organic products when we cannot find organic and we know and trust the producers, as is the case here, these apples are delicious, grown in Maine by wonderful farmers, but are not certified organic*

-Heiwa Local Organic Tofu - a staple offering to our summer shares, this tofu is freshly made, organic, and LOCAL amazing.  It'll perk up any stir-fry! $5.00/block

-Winter Hill Farm Feta - award winning cow's milk feta from one of our favorite cheese makers! A little limited this week - order early. This cheese will be in cheese shares this week  $9.00/container

If you have any trouble customizing or adding, please email us ASAP, and we'll help.  If there is time over the weekend, we'll walk newbies through it over the phone, if not, we'll take care of swaps and adds for you.  Just please be sure to let us know if you run into any difficulties!

Hang in there folks!
