Fall is in the air, but summer will linger for a little while...
We're into that beautiful time of year where you can feel fall around the corner, but summer veggies linger (though they slow down) and the days are still warm. It's amazing how the first week of September brings such a seasonal, life, and food shift. I think I wake up on September first dreaming of cooking soup and roasting potatoes. You can really feel the shift around the farm - a few days ago during morning meeting a V of geese flew overhead headed south, the buzz of insects has dimmed a little, and the light at the end of the day actually feels like the afternoon rather than mid-day. The transition of the farm into fall work is about to kick into full tilt. Onions, currently field curing are soon to head into storage. The winter squash is *almost* ready to harvest, which means we'll soon be turning our cold storage into warm storage to get it through the winter. And biggest of all is our "flipping" of the greenhouses, which has started, but in the next few weeks will kick into high gear. I think I'll save the details for another newsletter, but the coordination of the timing and labor as we pull out the summer vegetables and transform them into winter green growing machines can be tough.
Enjoy the last pushes of summer before they slide into full fall!
