Farm happenings for Week of July 13th

Posted on July 13th, 2020 by Kelly Morris

FARM UPDATE:

We finally got some much needed rain! We've been running the irrigation on our crops in plastic but the direct seeded crops are much happier now. This week we're harvesting the first variety of onions: Ailsa Craig. These uncured, sweet onions will only store about a month so use them up or store them in the fridge. We're also putting garlic in shares this week. The garlic has been curing in our barn for about 2 weeks. You can use it right away or store it in a dry, dark place like in an open paper bag in a cupboard or pantry.

PICK YOUR OWN:

The first planting of cherry tomatoes are fruiting! There are 2 varieties, a red and yellow, and both are very tasty! Please refrain from sampling in the field. Another planting of sunflowers is also blooming. Feel free to use these in your bouquets.

UPCOMING TALKS IN THE FIELDS:

August 8th 1:30-2:30pm - Pepper Power with Dominique Didier. Dominique Didier will introduce guests to the many varieties of peppers grown at Homefields, and will share recipes, tips, and tricks for preserving and pickling peppers, both hot and sweet. Samples will be provided. More information and tickets are available here.

Thank you,

Your farmers,
Katie, Elizabeth, Brad, Brian, Christina, Kelly and Matt
