The farm is taking a nice big drink of rain in this morning. Its amazing to see how things really start to perk up and get growing as soon as moisture comes and the days lengthen.
The cauliflower, kohlrabi, beets and broccoli are inching their way closer to being ready to harvest. A few solid days of warm weather and we should have those ready. Fruit is also forming in our young orchard and all of the bare root trees we planted this winter are leafing out!
This past weekend was a busy one. We dug some holes for fencing posts in anticipation of a few new farm friends coming in the next few months.
I also got the "teenager" coop ready for the chicks we had hatched last month. They will get their own space from the mature ladies. We're trying to keep the drama between them to a minimum. I have it on my ever-growing to do list to build a roll-out nesting box. We have a few egg eaters on our hands that have been gobbling up to five eggs a day before I can get my hands on them. The new nesting box will roll the freshly laid egg away from their hungry beaks so that we can have a few too.
A few of our bare root shrubs went into the ground too. These perennials will have multi-purpose benefits of providing cutting material for bouquets as well as serving to cut down wind and provide habitat for birds and beneficial insects. Plus, they're just wonderful to look at.
We are continuing to sow our cooler weather crops in the nursery and continue to direct seed more carrots, turnips, and radishes that should carry us into May and June. We have no intention of slowing down anytime soon
Radishes are coming in strong this week for our CSA boxes. Besides the tried and true salad garnish I recommend trying them in two ways:
1. Mixing up some honey butter and dipping them in raw for an awesome afternoon snack.
2. Halving them and sauteing them with greens on. A splash of chile olive oil, salt, and some rosemary helps make this an awesome and easy side dish.
