After a long week of solo and often highly focused and serious work on the farm, we had a bit of an adventure this afternoon! Around mid-day today, I was working alone, getting some drip irrigation set up and 'Purple Lady' Bok Choy transplanted when I HEARD, not saw, the bees. They were in a fast-flying mass just outside of one of the hives. Fortunately, Zak, who was the original farmer of this project and is now (among many things) our resident certified beekeeper, was not far away. By the time I called him to ask for advice, they had swarmed on the Black Locust tree that outlines our fields. After checking in with his mentors and calling for backup, he was able to get the swarm off the limb and into a super. Pictured is a dead limb he cut off what was covered in a swarm of thousands of bees.
Our hive "swarmed" because another queen was born where there already was one, so this box full of bees, if they decide to stick around, will become a new hive!
Beyond bees being incredibly beautiful and mysterious creatures and any interaction with them enjoyable, it was a real break from the constant buzzing of stress and anxiety we're all feeling as we're trying to launch this new farm season. Thank you, bees!
Regarding this pre-season Farm Stand share, we have a contactless pickup all planned and ready for you next Wednesday, if you chose to purchase some veggies and herbs from us this week. Oh and a limited supply of Strawberries!
