Farewell to the 2020 Farm Season

Posted on November 15th, 2020 by Lilly Emendy

What a year it's been! We are so honored that you chose to support our little teaching farm project and for some of you, who have stuck it out with us the last two years, THANK YOU! Your Harvest Box this week will be filled with vegetable that tell the tale of this season... beautiful healthy plants, that are behind schedule! We have made some tremendous progress in developing our programs and systems of farming. We know our soil better, our community better, and have a clear vision for what changes the 2021 season will bring (more on that later!). But as always, what we are most proud of is the people who have been involved in starting this little farm. Here's a peek at what they are up to now:

Zak Sturm: Zak is still in Greensboro and visits the farm from time to time- but most importantly in his life, he is having a baby in less than a month! He and his partner Teta will be inviting their child into the world mid-December and are bursting with joy about it.

Olivia Shepherd: Since leaving her fellowship in Greensboro she has moved back o Georgia, married her sweetheart, Thomas and began teaching as a FoodCorps member this Fall. She is deeply connected to the land through her faith and is sharing her infectious joy for working with the land with the students she's with.

Ano Waller: Ano is back at A&T for his Junior year, pursuing a degree in Horticulture. He has been visiting the farm time to time and tending the bed of Yarrow in our South Fields. Through his internship with us this summer he connected with an herbalist mentor and is finding deep satisfaction from learning the medicinal properties and powers of plants.

Nallah Muhammed: Nallah transitioned from her internship with the Teaching Farm this summer to a permanent role with Out of the Garden Project as our volunteer coordinator and Sustainability Director! She has been teaching weekly youth volunteer sessions at the Farm with kids and families from the neighborhood with the excitement and grounded energy she brings to every project. Those kids LOVE her. She is working on some big picture ideas around waste management, connecting our food reclamation program with our compost needs at the Teaching Farm. Exciting prospects!

Abhi Bugger and Jaqcueline Harper: Abhi has been working from Celebrity Dairy Farm making goat cheese and tending the herd! Jacqueline spent the Summer in Nome, Alaska working with youth and preparing locally sourced healthy foods.

The network of empowered, creative, and informed people that has branched our from the Teaching Farm is a really inspiring thing that we are only going to keep building on, thanks to your financial support of our project.

We will send out some update emails throughout the winter keeping you informed of next year's signups and any vegetables and herbs we have for sale this winter. Until then, stay safe and warm everyone!
