Happy Summer Solstice to you, Farm-ily!
It seems fitting that today, when we harvested juicy tomatoes and abundant zucchini, is the first official day of summer. It is the longest day of the year, giving us extra hours of daylight not just to work, but to appreciate this new season. Summer is the time of "fruiting vegetables". Tomatoes are a well-known example of this dichotomy between culture and botany. Eggplants, cucumbers, peppers, peas, beans, okra, and squashes are also all born from blossoms, and the flavorful parts we love to eat are their seed-bearing structures.
Fruiting vegetables are a particular crowd, needing longer to grow then leafy greens and warmer temperatures to ripen. Their presence on our plates is a reward for well-managed nutrient profiles in soil, careful calibration of irrigation, and patience. They are a far more reliable indicator of summer than a date on a calendar. This week, the soft scarlet and crimson of our heirloom tomatoes heralds true summer.
