This week we harvested most of the remaining onions in the field. What fun! Up till now it has been sweet onions going into shares. I love, love sweet onions - a raw Walla Walla sliced thin with tomato is a moment I look forward to each summer. The sweet onions were hit with downy mildew early this year and so didn't really size up nicely. You have likely noticed that the onions you've received in your box in weeks past have been small. This week's harvest of "Yankee" yellow onions was much more encouraging. Yankees are mildew resistant and the crop looks really nice - large, solid bulbs. Hope you enjoy. In the accompanying photo, Anne and Lynelle are holding onions that they helped to harvest. Both of these volunteers were a part of planting, weeding and finally harvesting the onions. An almost full circle - I sent them home with a few onions to complete the circle in their kitchens!
We also have an excellent crop of leeks growing - perfect for warming soups as the weather cools (but not this weekend!) and bulk sales of garlic will continue until we run out of supply.
We have meat available while supplies last - pork products from Gelderman's in Abbotsford - all in 1 pound packages. Bacon, farmer's sausage, smokies are all fantastic. We have a bit of ground beef - organic and grass fed from Tango meats. Finally, we have our own stewing hens available - old layers which are flavourful and best for long, slow cooking (for soup stock).
Peace and safety as you get into fall rhythms. We look forward to welcoming more greens and getting into winter squash by the end of this month. We trust that our work is nourishing to your family!
