We hope you all survived the heat this week and found some nice ways to cool off. It was a tough week for us on the farm working in such intense heat. But our team made it through working as early as we could, taking lots of breaks in the shade and dips in the river.
One evening this week we pulled in a bunch of A Rocha staff (office folks, education team, conservation science team and whomever else could be convinced) to join us for our first annual onion weeding race!
Onions always seem to be the trickiest crop for us to keep weeded. They are a long season crop and don't have big leaves to shade out weeds like many of our other crops do. I am sure you've heard me go on about their challenging nature before...
So a few weeks ago when we were looking at the onion patch in despair we got the idea to invite the entire team out to join us in the weeding process.
We put on some energizing music and gave each person got their own row and then we all raced down the field to see who could pull their weeds the fastest and be the first to the end of their 100ft row. To end the event we shared popsicles and celebrated our champion, Abby Simonin.
And as we gathered in that circle I looked around and felt so much energy and encouragement from all the folks who showed up. In the peak season/mid-July, after a long week in the heat it was such an encouragement to have so many folks join us in the work on the farm!
Moments like this make me feel so lucky to farm in the context of a community of folks who also care about food and farming and land and each other and are up for jumping in to stuff like this!
A few notes on veggies this week - first off BEANS ARE HERE! We are so excited to be starting on the bean harvest and sending those your way!
And next the pickling cucumbers are starting to come on - so we are selling 8lb pickling cuke bags for those who want to make your own pickles this summer. If you are looking for a larger quantity contact me and we are happy to do special orders of pickling cukes!
Finally we have just received our order of Red Russian Garlic! We are selling in 1lb bags and that is also listed in extras!
Abby after winning the weeding race (Abby is also our new Sustainable Agriculture Coordinator, we will introduce her more formally to y'all soon!)
