What did that slow cool spring mean for our late summer veggies? Well, unfortunately it might have meant a little less abundance.
For those who were with us last season, you might remember that we were swimming in the abundance of melons, corn, and tomatoes. But this summer they have been slow and not so bountiful. I am as bummed as many of you about this. But the reality is: some of the crops we really love are the ones who need the heat most! And since we are growing without heated tunnels, it was really a challenge to keep the plants at a temperature where they would want to be at this season with such a cool wet spring. We were delayed 2-3 weeks in planting out these crops and so they were delayed and a bit stressed, which ultimately led to less fruit.
I wanted to share this with you all just so that you understood why you aren't seeing as much of these items in your shares these days. This is one of the parts of being in a CSA: a chance to support the farm in abundance or failure and everywhere in between. While the melons, corn, and tomatoes are late and few, we hope that you are enjoying the many other beautiful crops such as eggplant, beautiful beets, beans, chard, lettuces, and zucchinis galore.
Thanks for choosing to eat locally and support the farm!
