Hey Farm Box Family!
Summer time on the farm means busy, busy, busy! Chickens are laying, cows, sheep and goats are roaming and frolicking in the sun. It's going great down on the ranch.
We are working on some new fencing and rotating the animals more frequently. We are trying a new method of rotational grazing. We got some great tips from seasoned farmers who feed their livestock grass. When the livestock eat the tops of the grass, it promotes increased growth of the grass. This is because when more of the leaf is exposed to the sun, the plant can produce more chlorophyll for food through photosynthesis.
On the other hand, when the livestock are grazing in one area for a few days, and are eating all of the grass, trodding down the soil, it does promote microbial growth in the soil, but it will take longer for the pasture to re-grow. With the amount of livestock we have, consistent livestock rotation will help the pasture grow better, preventing over grazing, allowing the land to rest while portions of the land are in grazing. Similarly, with the animals constantly moving, it promotes healthy digestion and healthy animals!
We will be adding back meat to our CSA deliveries in the coming weeks. We look forward to serving you better!
