Already thinking about next year

Posted on November 11th, 2020 by Daniel Zimmerli

Next season. Seems like it's so far away but our minds are already on it. We're thinking about which varieties of seeds we'll plant, what we'll be putting into tunnels next year, what new equipment might help us be more efficient, and what new things we might want to try.

It may seem a little crazy but we've already put in our seed order for 2021. COVID19 had an impact on seed companies and many companies ran low on seeds or were backed up with so many orders it took a week or more to get them out. Being the planners that we are and wanting to ensure we're able to grow all the varieties we've come to love over the years we placed our order last week and the seeds are already here. We usually order in February!

We bought two new, larger caterpillar tunnels this season and we have a rough outline of what we'll be putting in them. We have one tunnel that will grow some warm season crops like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and basil. That tunnel will be "turned over" in the fall and we'll plant winter crops in it. The second tunnel will be used for cool season crops so we have have more variety earlier in the season. We're planning on planting peas, lettuce, spinach, beets and carrots in the second tunnel. We'll then follow with head lettuce.

We also got busy and put up one of the new tunnels last week. It was quite the project and took Caitlyn and I a full day to assemble. We made some mistakes along the way and didn't always do things as efficiently as we could have. I think the second tunnel will take half the time.

We have one more winter market before Thanksgiving and the next market will be held December 19th. We're not sure if we'll be going to the December market as it is extremely close to our baby's due date. This Saturday we will have beets, carrots, daikon radish, lettuce, some kohlrabi, and popcorn available. Our lettuce should last until Thanksgiving without issue so stock up for the holiday!
