In the past week we've done something we've never done before on our farm. We are officially caught up on weeding on the farm! The main contributor to that phenomenon is the drought. What usually happens is after every rainfall we get a new flush of weeds that sprout on our farm but since we've had almost nothing for rain (.3" so far for all of June) there are few new weeds sprouting. That is the one silver lining on this years drought.
The drought continues to be a major impediment on our farm. We're having a lot of issues with carrots this season since carrots take a rather long period of time to germinate and our soil is not staying wet enough, even with irrigation, to consistently germinate our carrots. In addition, some of the carrots we were able to get germinated are dying from the intense heat and lack of rain. We move around our sprinklers every day and keep trying to nudge along our plants until we get a sizeable rain.
One bright spot on the farm right now, besides the relatively weed free farm, is that our caterpillar tunnel tomatoes are looking really nice. We're not 100% sure when these tomatoes will be ready but it's looking like sometime early to mid July which will be the earliest we've ever harvested full size tomatoes on our farm. We can't wait to share them with you!
