We're at the time of year where we're planting our final seeds of the season and we can almost feel the fall weather coming. We always look forward to fall here on the farm for a variety of reasons. First, the cooler temperatures are a welcome change of pace, especially this summer where we have had an abundance of warm, humid days. We also look forward to the slightly slower change of pace which usually happens in late September. Plus the beautiful fall colors and who can forget our long season, fall crops like winter squash as well as the return of favorites like radish and spinach.
We're trying out a new experiment this year in our larger caterpillar tunnels: growing crops with intent on harvesting them in late November and early December. We did a trial run of this last season with lettuce and kohlrabi and despite our timing be off slightly, we were able to harvest some lettuce and kohlrabi the first week of December. Our winter crop trial for this season includes kale, swiss chard, radish, arugula, spinach, kohlrabi and lettuce. We've already started some of these seeds indoors and will transplant them in the coming weeks. We will also be direct seeding many of the crops in our tunnels in the next week. If our experiment is successful, look for these crops at our winter market dates that will be announced soon!
We also have completed our outdoor seeding for the year. We have plantings of radish, arugula, spinach, and lettuce that look really good and barring any terrible weather or insect infestation we hope to have these items available in Harvie by mid to late September.
