One of the major initiatives on our farm this year is to continue experimenting with winter growing. We think it could be possible to be harvesting lettuce, kale, chard, kohlrabi, and several other crops into December! We did a small trial run with kohlrabi and lettuce last season and managed to harvest some slightly frost damaged lettuce in early December last season and we have a couple strategies we're going to try to eliminate the frost damage.
In pursuit of that goal we planted several varieties of lettuce into one of our larger tunnels to try to find the most frost resistant lettuce out there. Coupling frost resistant lettuce with ground cover and careful irrigation timing could produce lettuce as late as December. Wouldn't it be awesome to still be eating fresh, locally grown produce in December?! We think so!
