The winter tunnel was cut a little short this year due to consistent below average cold the week before Thanksgiving. This is always one of the risks and challenges with winter growing and, more broadly, farming in general. Luckily, we were able to harvest and store some baby cabbages, kohlrabi, and we think we might get another small harvest of spinach. But what do we do with the rest?
As the photo for this weeks Farm Happening hints at, we are feeding the frozen broccoli and the remainder of the cabbage plants to our chickens! While we would much rather be growing food for humans, feeding the greens and leftovers to the chickens is a great way to keep our chickens happy and healthy. Not to mention also lowering our feed bill ever so slightly. It will also ensure our tunnel is as close to ready as possible for spring crops.
