Much Needed Rain
After a extremely wet start to the year we’ve been enduring a bit of a dry spell here on the farm. In fact, we’ve seen a couple plantings of beets fail to germinate due to lack of moisture. We’ve even been running sprinklers on some crops to help speed them along.
Luckily, on Sunday we got almost an inch of much needed rain and the farm is LOVING it. The peas came in furiously after the rain and our most recent plantings of beets, sweet corn and beans popped up with vigor.
With Rain Comes More Weeds
Rain also means another flush of weeds will come up. We’re moving as swiftly as possible to try to eliminate the weeds while they’re young and easy to kill. You might be wondering why weeding is so important and there are several reasons. First, killing weeds removes competition so that our crops can thrive. Second, killing weeds makes it easier to harvest everything. Third, removing weeds improves the quality of our produce. No one wants lettuce mix that has grass and other weeds mixed in! We work really hard to try to reduce and eliminate weeds and grass from getting into our produce.
Fathers Day Fishing
We celebrated fathers day by going for a quick fishing trip at a somewhat hidden fishing hole near my hometown. Goldmine Lake is a little fishing hole right off the Minnesota River near my hometown of Wabasso. I’ve been fishing there since I was a little kid and we brought Addie out for her first trip to Goldmine. She doesn’t seem too interested in fishing yet and she wasn’t impressed at all with the bass I caught but it was fun to share something I did with my dad with Addie.
