Teaching Them Young
One of the most rewarding things in the past couple years has been seeing how Addie has embraced small farm life. This week, I told Addie and Lara that I was going out to the pack shed to seed some lettuce and cabbage and Addie asked “Can I come with?” While I knew it would take me longer to seed the lettuce and cabbage whilst wrangling my 2.5 year old I also knew this would be some really great quality time with her.
So with mismatched boots and no pants Addie came out to the pack shed to seed lettuce and cabbage with me. I found some old, unneeded seed that Addie could use to plant her tray. It went really well! She was so happy to be my “good little helper” and she was engaged and interested in the work we were doing. Sure, eventually she just dumped all the seeds out into her tray but it was so nice to spend that time with her and to see her so interested in the work we do to support our family and our community.
Storm Damage! Yikes!
We had a small, pop-up storm last Thursday that caused some damage on one of our tunnels. If you were in Mankato around 4pm last Thursday you might remember the incredibly loud thunder crack. We sure did, as we were at the farmers market at the time and it seemed like the associated lightning bolt was directly over head.
While it’s a huge bummer to lose the plastic covering on our tunnel after only a year, we are lucky in that none of the metal was damaged. While the plastic is expensive to replace, the metal hoops are much more so. Furthermore, we didn’t lose any crops inside the tunnel so we lucked out there too. All things considered, it could have been a lot worse!
We’ve already got new plastic for the tunnel here on the farm and when we have a calm day we will spend a few hours pulling new plastic on the tunnel and continue on as usual.
We had no other damage to any crops or structures on the farm and we’re glad that the predicted July 4th storms didn’t materialize for us.
