Despite a small blunder our fall spinach is well underway. We planted this spinach about 2 weeks ago and we're pretty happy with the stand we have. "Stand" is an unscientific term that essentially means the number of actual plants in a row/bed/field. Having a good stand means you have the right amount, or close to, of plants per bed. We expect our fall spinach to be ready in about 2-3 weeks and we should have spinach available until the end of the summer CSA and well into the winter.
What was the blunder? Well, we transplanted some lettuce next to the spinach we seeded. We generally like to run the sprinklers after we transplant to help settle the soil around the roots of the transplants. We intended to let the irrigation run for about an hour but we accidentally left it on for almost 24 hours. Ooops! I felt really dumb but these things happen from time to time.
