Farm Happenings for 7/7/2020: Summer is Here! & Update from New Beat Farm

Posted on June 30th, 2020 by Daybreak Growers Alliance

Happy summer everyone, we're all so grateful for the much needed rain we've been getting the last few days! The summer crops are rolling in, you'll see the first of the broccoli, summer squash, scallions and kohlrabi along with all of the greens in this week's shares, hooray for summer!

There are some sweet Extras available in the fruit and veggie section this week! Quarts and flats of Strawberries, IPM, from Fair Wind Farms, cauliflower and napa cabbage from Chase Farm (non-OG) and rhubarb (non-OG) from Cross Patch Farm.

With grilling season in full swing we'll be offering some meat cuts in the Extras section, boneless pork chops from Leaf & Caul, chicken from Common Wealth Farm, 2lb. packs of ground beef from Community Harvest, and Young Mutton Sausage links and ground lamb from New Beat Farm . . . all great for grilling along with all the veggies. A perfect condiment is South Paw Farm's new line of Organic Chile Sauces, Perfect Picker, for slathering on everything, and Boss Lady, for heat lovers.

Enjoy the season and stay safe.

P.S.: The crew at Daybreak thinks the best news of the season comes from New Beat Farm, see their update below!

Update from New Beat Farm

Here at New Beat summer is starting to kick into full swing. I spied the first cherry tomatoes on the vine yesterday and our greenhouse cucumbers are growing at least a foot a week and look great! The welcomed rain this morning sure helped to secure abundant harvests to come. Our rainbow beets are sizing up and you’ll be seeing them in your shares throughout the summer. These sweet tender beets still have tasty greens on them, great to saute with garlic scapes or scallions. You may have received some of our beautiful heads of escarole. This mild bitter chicory makes for a super refreshing salad on a hot day topped with a creamy dressing, maybe made out of Appleton Creamery goat cheese?

This is a big year here for us at the farm as we’ve welcomed the newest member of our farm family Robin Elizabeth Lee on June 3rd! She’s amazing and we’re so glad we finally were brave enough to take this jump into parenthood and farming with children. We are grateful for our rock star crew that is helping to keep things running smoothly as we adjust to life with this new little being. Looking forward to sharing her more with you in the future!

With the heat our flowers are starting to really come in. Our sweet peas are exploding and our field flowers are coming in well. Ashely and Ariane have been busy picking and planting and it’s great to start seeing the fruits of their labor in these beautiful blooms! We hope you are enjoying your flower shares from our sister company Belladonna Floral!
