Happy Friday!
The weather on the farm has been kind of crazy, just about 80 degrees in February. Now that we are finishing up one of the driest Februaries in history, compared to last year’s amazingly wet one, I just don’t know what to think anymore. It is extremely difficult to plan with such vastly different years, but we are so grateful to have had the opportunity to get plants in the ground. The sad thing is we have a lot of Romanesco in the field and it is not happy with this much heat. So we have Romanesco available as an extra item, if you would like to add it to your box next week. We will be bringing a couple of hundred pounds to the market this weekend and hopefully will sell loads there. Also, the new batch of chicken stock is in and available and hogging room in our freezers. I have not had a chance to try it yet, but Tomas from Roli Roti told me it was one of the best he has made. So maybe Romanesco soup?
Today is CSA Sign-Up Day. This is the perfect time to really nudge those friends who have been sitting on the fence to give our farm a try! If you need a little help persuading them I have a few tips on the benefits of joining a CSA.
Joining a farm’s CSA means you are eating local, this means by default you will be eating seasonally, your food will be fresher, maybe not as beautiful, but certainly better tasting. By eating local you are supporting your local economy not just by supporting that farm, but all the local businesses your farm works with benefit too because we farmers spend a lot of money. Local = Seasonal and that means you get the joy and excitement of looking forward to seasons, like really delicious strawberries in season, tomatoes, red juicy and flavorful in season. Don’t we all know that by the time you tire of tomatoes, you will be excitedly anticipating the arrival of the first greens, sweet potatoes and water squash. Think of the joy we all share when the seasons change? People who eat all fruits and vegetables from the super market, at the wrong time of year, grown half way around the world, have no idea what they are missing! Kids love food from the farm, especially if they have a chance to visit. Most kids get really excited tasting chard and kale out in the field even those who won’t touch it at home. But when they get that farm experience it changes for them. Speaking of farm experiences, that alone is a great reason to join Eatwell's CSA. We love for you all to come visit the farm and give you many opportunities to do so. The last thing I would like to say is, you all get a direct connection to the place where you food comes is grown. You read the stories, you visit, you experience, and in this world of online ordering we desperately need connection. So here we are, your connection to the food you eat. I hope you all can share some of your excitement for your farm. Oh and don’t forget the first two CSA member Strawberry Days are posted and tickets are available here.
