Farm Happenings for Oct 11-16th 2021

Posted on October 12th, 2021 by Marnie Chown

This week we have lots of arugula, stir-fry mix and squashes but no lettuce unfortunately. :(

We are seeing some powdery mildew in a couple of the lettuce and romaine beds so we are unable to harvest from those. Sorry about that!

Powdery mildew is fungal disease that is quite common at this time of the year because of the cooler temperatures and lack of sunlight. Moisture tends to stay on the leaves of plants for longer than normal and therefore the conditions are perfect for the fungus to thrive.

We have some beds that aren't affected at this time but they are not quite ready to harvest from. Hopefully the unaffected beds will stay healthy and will be ready for next week!

If you've never tried kale salad, this might be the week to do it! Check out this awesome recipe from Minimalist Baker. (we lover her recipes)

Kale & Lentil Salad with Roasted Beets

The arugula is sooo tasty right now! It's got a bit of a kick to it when eaten fresh but if you're not a fan of it in salads or stir-fries, another way to enjoy it is in pesto! Check out this recipe:

 Arugula Pesto

It freezes well and makes a wonderful addition to pizzas, pastas and more in the winter.

We are making some larger heads of garlic available now that we are all through the small heads and we have decided how much we will plant. The larger heads are listed as 3 heads for $5. Once we are through all of ours we will have Sarah's garlic available!

This week we also have granny smith apples from Sarah! They are from her small family orchard and they are absolutely delicious!! There aren't that many available so look for them in the extras area if you are interested.
