What's Happening - September 8 & 10

Posted on September 2nd, 2020 by Mattie Serna

Greetings Farm Fans!

We have some exciting new produce for you this week!  Our first harvest of lunchbox peppers is coming in!  These little beauties are colorful, sweet, and tasty!  And our friends at Lattin Farms are picking them by the peck - which begs the question, what exactly is a peck???

I am back from my rabbit hole and can now report that a PECK is 8 quarts - and equals one quarter of a bushel...  So it would be more appropriate to say that our farmers are picking peppers by the bushel.

We are also listing large numbers of canary melons, the first delicata squash of the season, and ample fixings for a killer salsa verde.  Bell peppers are coloring up so our Green bells now include Orange bells, and the purple and green mix is accompanied by red bells.  We have heirloom tomatoes, slicing tomatoes, and a variety of cherry colors (red, yellow, black, and purple). Squash portions have increased to 2#s as it is coming in by the wagon load!

On a concerning note, you will not be seeing produce from our friend Salisha this week.  Her farm was potentially impacted by overspray from a crop duster servicing a neighboring alfalfa field.  So we are holding off on Salisha's listings pending test results about unwanted exposure to contaminants.  My thoughts are with Salisha - she is a certified organic farmer and committed to growing the healthiest produce out there.  Hopefully, we will find that there was no contamination and we can get back to sharing her amazing greens, herbs, and cucurbits.

Winter squash is right around the corner and I am anxious to introduce you all to some exciting new winter squash varieties.  I have also been assured that potatoes are coming soon...  (I keep nagging about potatoes).

I hope this message finds you well, and as always THANK YOU for your support of Nevada farmers!
