Greetings Farm Fans!
Hope you are all toasty and warm during this cold snap! Our farmers have tucked their produce in tight and are weathering the cold as best they can! We are all waiting for Northern Nevada's real spring to come!
New this week we have baby cabbage from Desert Farming Initiative at the University of Reno. DFI is a collaboration between UNR College of Agriculture, Bio-technology and Natural Resources, Co-operative Extension, and Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station.
The mission of the Desert Farming Initiative is to advance and strengthen sustainable agriculture and food systems in Nevada that can be transferred and replicated in other desert climates.
Demonstrate: Operate a diverse commercial farm and demonstrate – best crops, production techniques, and sustainable farming practices that are economically viable and successful in the Nevadan high desert climate.
Education: Create opportunities for learn by doing, hands on farm experiences for students, farmers, and the public. Provide resources and information about sustainable farming and food systems for desert climates, food safety, and general crop production information.
Outreach and Technical Assistance: Actively inform and engage with the community and stakeholders about agricultural systems that address the challenges of both economic and environmental sustainability in desert climates; and provide assistance to growers regarding agricultural regulations, policies, crop production techniques, and environmental stewardship.
Research: Facilitate and develop research opportunities, collaborating with University faculty and students, other organizations and agencies, and industry to improve agricultural practices for desert climates.
DFI utilizes all organic practices and has the highest standards of farming food safety!
Thank you for your support of Nevada Farmers!
