News from ALL YOUR Farm Families!

Posted on August 19th, 2021 by Angela Bedient

Thanks for another great week!  We end this one with A LOT of rain and pray that everything on the farms and fields remains in one piece.  As of this time we have received nearly 3 inches I believe!

I will leave this week's happening to Joe and Tim and their families....read below for notes from both!  Thank you all!

A Note From Green Ridge Acres, Joe and Marla Fox

Hi Everyone!  This is Joseph Fox from Green Ridge Acres.  You haven't heard from us for a while.  We have been very busy.  In between harvesting triticale grain, (a cross between wheat and rye using natural breeding methods) for our cows and 3rd cutting baleage, also for the cows and picking produce for you all, we have been blessed with an addition to our family!  On July 22, Jolene was born.  We now have 1 boy and 7 girls.  Jolene is a healthy little girl.  She has many built in baby sitters.  Six sisters that want turns holding her.

We are now half way through produce season.  So far it has been very productive.  The green string beans are the only plants not doing well.  They yield only about 1/3 as much as the yellow beans.  I think we should try a different kind next year.  Sorry for the shortage in green string beans.

We have been able to keep offering spinach, red beets and carrots all season long.  We plant a new batch of each of the above, every 2 to 3 weeks.

So far we have been fortunate with very little insect or disease problems.  The grass hoppers are doing the most damage.  They eat little holes in the spinach.  We came to the conclusion if the grasshoppers like the spinach it is still good eating for us.  Spinach gets old and bitter quickly in this hot and humid weather.

We have been hearing some comments that our carrots are the best carrots our customers ever ate.  The one store we supply with carrots, the owner sheepishly admitted that he can't keep his hands off our carrots, they are so good.  I assured him that I don't care who eats them as long as they are good.

Also if you have any concerns about taste or quality let us know!  We want to keep you all happy.

Stay safe and stay healthy for the rest of the summer!

Joe

A Note from Tim and Marie Fox and family!

Howdy to you all!  This finds us busy picking summertime goodies!  We are having a nice amount of rain, for sure!  But too much damp weather gives diseases a chance to take over.  And that is what's happening!  So if you were hoping to can pickles or tomatoes don't wait too long, as once the plants start going backwards they go fast.

This also finds us "thinking" about next year.  We are getting 1,000 strawberry plants any day!  We ordered seed garlic that also gets planted mid-October.

We won the battle with the raccoons by putting an electric fence around our sweet corn.  Raccoons love sweet corn.  In one evening they can ruin one batch!  So if you're hungry for sweet corn, we've got plenty!  (Since we don't share with the raccoons)!

We hope you enjoy the veggies as much as we enjoy offering them to you!
