October is here and so are all the flavors of fall!
Some frost hit this past week on many of the farms, taking with it the basil and some of the squash plants. But we still have lots of variety including greens being grown in the high tunnels and new fall items like winter radish and rutabaga!
Have you tried the micro greens yet? We have pea shoots, broccoli sprouts and radish sprouts.
Golden beets are back too! And the red beets are in full swing with half bushels available for canning and pickling.
The carrots are abundant and soooo sweet. Did you know that Joe, at Green Ridge Acres grows this variety of carrots that have an extra high brix count for sweetness! His use of cover crops and amazing soil building practices also add to the nutrient-packed nature of his veggies. We love to can these and cold store these to enjoy all winter long. We will have them available for your boxes for a good bit longer.
We also have green beans by the half bushel this week! Norman at Burkholder's Scenic View Farm was able to harvest all the remaining plants before the frost and salvage a good crop of beautiful green beans. So enjoy them fresh by the pound, or grab another half bushel to preserve for winter.
Thank you for choosing to support our small family farms! See you at deliveries this week!
