Farm Happenings for October 23, 2019

Posted on October 18th, 2019 by Joanna Winkler

Frost is upon us! It's supposed to hit freezing at our farm early tomorrow morning so we've taken as many precautions as we can to protect our plants. We don't expect it to be an extreme frost, but we do think it will be the end of our pepper plants - RIP! It ought to make many things sweeter like kale, radishes and turnips now that they've been kissed by frost. Every year the first frost catches us off guard, but this year it feels especially sudden. We've been very busy harvesting and selling loads of produce to restaurants and wholesale customers along with CSA harvest, so we're a little behind on the growing/cultivating/planting cover crops side of things. It's certainly a good problem to have, though a bit overwhelming. We've been enjoying the cozier delights of this cooler weather like hot tea, fires in our wood stove and tasty fall recipes. We love pairing hearty veggies like turnips and potatoes with buttery lettuce salads. We've added celeriac to our availability this week, which we love to cook with. We use it in lieu of celery in most recipes. Sometimes we'll also slice it thinly with a mandolin and shock it in ice water, then use it to top salads for an aromatic punch. Stay cozy, and happy eating this week!
