IN addition to beautiful veggies this week, we've got strawberries and some great cook-out ready preserves for your summer barbeques! Sign into your account to swap veggies and add local strawberries, craft pickles, or blueberry preserve to your share this week!
It's getting hot in the fields, and the last few days have been misty so the sweaty mess/itchy arm factor is high as we pick summer squash before the weekend. So it's a little annoying, but so worth it, since this heat is really going to push some things along in the field. I picked my first cuke yesterday, and while they're still mostly too small for shares, they are coming. The crew reported baby melons after their weeding excursion to the melon field. The tomatoes are still a ways away, but you can practically see them growing and they look great, so we'll be swimming in them soon enough. So keep your fingers crossed for more heat, plenty of sun, and just the right amount of rain!
Also - I'd like to personally put in a plug for an under appreciated veggie heading into shares this week - COLLARD GREENS. You may love them already, and you may think I'm crazy for repping these greens that are often long stewed. But delicious southern recipes aside - I highly recommend these large round, flat greens because you know what they look like - tortillas, and if you're gluten free, keto, or just trying to get more veggies in your diet (me!) - you can slice the stem off the back, stuff them with rice and beans or ham and cheese or peanut sauce and veggies and you have yourselves a wrap. It's awesome - try it!
We've got some pretty great summer add-ons to complement your share this week:
STRAWBERRIES - it's been a tough year for berry growers all over the state, last winter was a doozy. And we've got some excellent super local berries from Fairwinds Farm, our neighbors (and Beth used to manage their veggie crew!). We've in the past grown our own, but the winter and the deer had other plans for our berries and our survival rate this spring was 0%. We're bummed, but happy to offer berries from a farm we love. *Note - Fairwinds's berries are not organic. They use a mix of conventional and organic methods to grow over 12 acres of berries. You can learn more about their farm HERE.* We worked hard to source organic berries for our members as an option, but they just aren't available this year. Hit us up with any questions.
Turtle Rock Farm Pickles and Blueberry Preserves
Jenn at Turtle Rock is another trusted and long time partner (some members may even pick-up at her spot!) She is beloved amongst farmers for turning our extras into fantastic organic preserves. In honor of summer we're offering her Organic Dill Pickles Chips (12 oz) and Organic Wild Blueberry Spreadable Fruit (9 oz) for sale with this week's share! Add these to your hot dog or your desserts!
