We're at peak summer everyone! It hasn't been the hottest July on record, but it's been close. The temperature reached 80+ degrees 24 days last month. That's a lot of tough days working outside. The heat feels like it's breaking a little, but the weather report is saying it'll be climbing back up in heat and humidity this weekend. So we're irrigating. And irrigating. And irrigating. We were a little spoiled this spring and early summer with steady and reliable rain, but there is nothing promising on the forecast - so we're running the pumps, setting up pipe, and tracking the tides.
Did you know that the river by the farm is tidal? The water is always fresh, but it rises and lowers like the tides in the ocean, meaning that sometimes the water is high enough to draw irrigation water from the river and sometimes it is too low and we have to wait for it to come up again. This means that we are usually able to water only once or twice a day depending on the flow of the tide and timing. So were always prioritizing what needs water next, and moving irrigation set ups regularly. As you can imagine - we've got our fingers crossed for some good rain....
So many people came and visited the farm last weekend! Thank you to everyone that came out to meet us and see where your food comes from. If you weren't able to make it - no worries, our U-pick is open! Saturday and Sunday from 8-5 you can come stroll around the farm, pick some goodies and visit the lovely Bowdoinham. The farmers won't always be around (we have lots of work on the weekends and also need our rest), but you are welcome to walk the fields and visit with the veggies!
Our U-pick Field is open!
If coming please plan to bring a jar for your flowers and water for the jar. For you, please bring a hat, water, sun protection, and proper footwear and clothing for the heat and sun. We'll provide scissors and bands and containers for cherry tomatoes.
