Hello there Members!
Happy Week 11! You've made it more than halfway through the Summer Harvest CSA eating local with us, and while we're rounding the bend on summer just a bit, there is still so much more to come. It is the height of fruit season here on the farm - we're finally being rewarded for putting up with the heat of the summer with lots of sticky, sugary, cantaloupe and watermelon! AND PEACHES. We have a limited amount of delectable peaches from Locust Grove in Albion available for add-ons this week. These peaches are local, tree-ripened, 100% no spray, and shipped only the distance from Albion to Bowdoinham to you! We are super excited to offer these! They are available by the quart and are $7.75 per quart, which is about 1.75 lbs. (Organic peaches at Hannaford are $4/lb for comparison). We're hoping to have these available beyond this week, but fruit farming in Maine is fickle - gotta enjoy it while you can!
On the farm, things are getting suuuuper dry. As I mentioned in a previous email, we keep the irrigation bumping along as much as we can, but there is no substitute for water from the sky. It's dusty, and pollin-y, and super August-y. But with that late August drag comes the knowing that we've rounded the bend on summer. The hard work of June and July is coming to bare as the fall and winter crops are starting to either wrap up their growth, or really take off. All of our garlic is in and we've begun pulling in all of the onions for winter. Onions are not the most exciting item, but it is a banner year for them. And while this dryness is tough on some crops, it's great for drying down the alliums for winter storage. The winter squash is holding steady and is a thick carpet of green, the winter cabbage has filled in, brussel sprouts are getting tall, and most importantly of all - today the crew finished weeding the beets and carrots. They look beautiful, not a weed in sight, my heart is happy. Any, all this to say, that at this point in the season, the die is cast, the path has been cleared. Still lots to do, tomatoes to pick, peppers to harvest, firewood to stack in the basement, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
