Week 15! Autumn Vibes

Posted on September 11th, 2020 by Bethany Allen

We're really creeping back into the fall crops now, which fits the cooling weather perfectly.   Broccoli is back with the cooler weather, we have so much of it coming your way (I'm holding my breath saying this because farming can be so unpredictable - but as of now, the crop looks great and the weather forecast good)! This is my favorite "easy" broccoli recipe: https://cookieandkate.com/perfect-roasted-broccoli-recipe/  Once you roast it you can eat it as a side to anything, toss it in a pasta salad, or a regular salad, top a pizza - anything!

We continued pulling out bins and bins of winter squash for our fall and winter shares this week, and there is an abundance - we also began the slow task of "flipping" our high tunnels to our winter crops.  They are currently housing our tomatoes, so slowly, as different types slow in their yielding, we'll yank out the tomatoes, till the soil to soften it, add compost, then plant the crops we'll be harvesting all winter long.  Chard and kale went in this week, but shortly, we'll be adding lettuce, Asian greens, and LOTS of spinach to keep us in greens all winter long.

This time of year is usually exciting for us farmers, the restful season is in sight, we literally get to harvest the fruits of so much of our labor and stock our coolers with tons and tons for the winter, and the weather can be glorious.  It's also a little melancholy as we say goodbye to another summer.  This year feels especially conflicted as the cooling weather means so much more than it usually does.  What will this fall/winter bring? It feels like we're staring down a lot of uncertainty as we head into another season with COVID, and while this is overwhelming, we're also reminded of how lucky we are to be part of the growing and eating community, and how grateful we are for all our customers who support us.  So as we move forward through into the fall, and these tough times carry on, know that we're thinking of all of you and we're feeling so lucky to be in Maine and feeding Mainers.  Thank you!

What to expect:

Our Autumn shares are designed to highlight vegetables that are at their peak in the fall. Crunchy leafy greens, winter squash, freshly harvested potatoes, frost sweetened broccoli, and more!  Items in each share mostly have a longer storage life than the perishable fruit of summer, so you can expect a share to last you through two weeks of local eating.

Just like in the summer, you can add eggs, cheese, yogurt and more to your shares at sign-up or weekly as available.
