Phew, I think I went a bit easy on August last week in the newsletter. August is really hard. In hearing from multiple farms this week, plants are wilting, farmers are getting heat exhaustion, and the general consensus is that this heat and August generally are the absolute worst. But seriously, we worry a lot about heat like this, it's really hard on our team. It saps your energy really quick, makes it hard to breath, and when it lasts for multiple days in a row, even with proper hydration and breaks it's really hard on the body. It can be dangerous. We basically have to, for everyone's safety go into "essential work only" mode for field work as it's just too much. I almost keeled over today just after unloading a particularly large wholesale order in Portland's heat - it took about 15 minutes in the AC full-blast to recoup and carry on. Anyway, looks like the worst is over and by mid-week next week we'll be back to reasonable working weather (fingers crossed), in the mean-time, I'll be floating in the Kennebec trying to regain my sanity so I can deal with the rest of August.
