Farm Happenings for February 18, 2020

Posted on February 12th, 2020 by Bethany Allen

Winter, winter where are you?

Winter has felt elusive this year.  Between warm days, too much rain (not enough snow), and busy weeks on the farm, it feels like there has been not nearly enough hunkering down in front of the fire on the farm.  I guess that's just life, always busier and busier :)  For things growing on the farm, warm weird winters like this can actually be not great.  Cold winters do far better at killing pests that over winter, which helps the following summer as we juggle all the things that come our way.  The lack of snow cover and drastically fluctuating temperatures can be hard on overwintering crops like onions, garlic, and our perennials in the U-pick which definitely prefer a thick blanket of snow to protect them.  Believe it or not, thicker snow cover is actually insulating, and it's a pretty consistent temperature below the snow, where as the air can dip and swing wildly, which can be very hard on plants.  We'll see, there's still quite a bit of winter left, and plants are amazingly resilient.  Here's hoping we get a good blizzard Thursday!

We're working on adding LOCALLY ROASTED, ORGANIC COFFEE to shares this summer, and because it's a new product for us, we'd love for you to answer a few questions for us.  We're trying to get an idea of how particular people are about their coffee and what they prefer before we add it as a share.  Please take this survey for us!

Awesome add-ons this week:

  • Cheve in oil with herbs - delicious goat cheese from the wonderful people at Kennebec Cheesery - this cheese is amazing.  It's a delicious fresh goat cheese that comes in oil, so it's perfect for dipping and spreading.  We love it on pizza/flatbread because you can also use the oil for flavor and crust dipping!  $8.50/container
  • Dill Pickle Chips - We've got extras!  Stock up while it's here.  $6.50 each
  • Whole pealed tomatoes - More tomatoes available! $6.00/jar  I recommend blending them into a puree and making this recipe, which you can adjust to add celery root and sweet potatoes to have it loaded full of veggies: BEST ITALIAN RIBOLLITA SOUP RECIPE

Happy Sunshine!
