Farm happenings for Week of October 19th

Posted on October 19th, 2020 by Kelly Morris

FALL HOURS: Thursday, 3pm-6pm, Friday 11am-6pm, Saturday 9am-1pm. Like always, feel free to come during any of our open hours. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before we close to allow yourself time to gather your veggies.

FARM UPDATE: We've got more beautiful Asian Greens this week. To provide as much choice as possible, I'm doing the same thing as last week where I've added a generic Asian Greens item to shares, but also added specific varieties that you can swap in to make sure you get your favorite type. Asian greens are great sautéed with honey and soy sauce or garlic and ginger. Some of the milder varieties make excellent salads.

In other farm happenings, we got plastic on the low tunnel today. This will protect the tender crops inside it from upcoming cold weather. We're also working on cleaning up the last of the tomato plants, and we'll start digging sweet potatoes this week. These will cure in our greenhouse for a few weeks before going out in shares. Curing allows the starches in the potatoes to sweeten turning them into that delicious orange veggie that you know and love. We'll also be doing some weeding in the direct seeded spinach and lettuce which will show up in shares soon!

WINTER CSA:  There are still a few spots left for the Winter CSA! The Winter CSA will feature special Thanksgiving and Christmas shares packed with your holiday favorites: potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, butternut squash, and much more. Sign up today to get your winter veggies from Homefields. Bread, eggs and mushrooms are also available to add to your Winter Veggie Share. Learn more and signup at www.homefields.org/farm
