Farm Happenings for the week of July 4, 2020

Posted on July 1st, 2020 by Jessica Foote

The battle continues between crows and drip lines as we continue to go without rain! They are quite persistent. We have everything on a watering routine hoping to keep the crops alive and well...

Furthermore, we have once again joined forces with our friends and fellow farmers. This week Puddle Duck had far to many kohlrabi and garlic scapes, Eat Local Muskoka has an over abundance of head lettuce, and Willo Wind had an overabundance of mesclun ,all are grown organically and of great quality! So we exchanged the above items for our over abundance of zucchini seemed like a fair trade all way round for everyone to get a wider variety of products! Although this isn't our common practice, this certainly isn't a normal year so we all must work together to survive the side effects of a drought and Covid-19. Food Security and maintaining our family farms becomes pretty high priority!

Furthermore, I have added and changed our veggies options so mushrooms are a part of the selection and won't be hiding amongst apples anymore! So please update your profiles!

For the adventurous eater I have also added purslane to our harvest this week! It is so yummy and nutrient dense that I had to share. It is high in Vitamin A, C, Magnesium, Manganese, Potassium, Iron, and Calcium! I love to eat it steamed or sauteed with butter, garlic, and Parmesan cheese! It is also great in a simple broth soup! Give it a try and you may find a new favorite veggie.

That's all folks! I must get back to haying.

Cheers, Jess
