Senator Tina Smith Visited our Farm!
Thank you U.S. Senator Tina Smith for visiting The Food Group and Land Stewardship Project at Big River Farms yesterday afternoon!
We covered a lot of ground and a lot of topics including USDA funding, climate change, land access, and SNAP. We heard from the farmers of Dawn2Dusk Farm, Somali American Farmers Association - SAFA, and Mhonpaj's Garden, as well as River Market Community Co-op.
“These are younger farmers, farmers that are trying to get into agriculture and they’re struggling to get access to land, and to try to get access to the capital that they need to build out their farms,” Smith said. “They are full of passion and energy, and I want to make sure that the USDA programs that we have are supporting these farmers as well as the farmers that are growing big commodities crops on thousands of acres.”
May works at Big River Farms as a Farm Mentor helping other farmers become farmers. She was leading the tour of our farm!
Thank you all for your continued support and patient with the new transitions to the blue bins. We hope that pretty soon everyone will get into the rhythm. We were stormed late Friday night and electricity went out at the farm while packing CSA boxes. Comming home with no lights. But we still managed to get to market Saturday morning! Thank you to everyone sharing there delicious pictures of meal ideas of what to do with vegetables. This week we will add some more greens to the inventory! We have been making zucchini bread with the abundance and pickling. Some pickling ideas are pickled beets, beans and peppers. Tomatillio is great in salsa. Happy Week we are seeing more and more people go on vacation and we just ask that you try to reschedule in advance your shares for a different week so that you can redeem your shares accordingly.
