We have been harvesting potatoes little by little over the past few weeks. The fingerlings are slow going to harvest but everybody loves them and you'll see them again this week!
It's been a tough summer with heat and humidity. Humid weather promotes fungal diseases like blights and wilts and rots and that's what we have here. Fungus among-us. Hey it's Maryland in August and we're doing the best we can. We hope you feel like we do-you'd rather eat food that may be a little ugly or a little small or misshapen rather than it being bathed in toxic pesticides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers etc. That said we do use organically approved sprays when we feel it is necessary. But the difference between Certified Organic approved sprays and commercial/chemical sprays are a world apart.
We have seeded spinach for Fall and have transplanted our fall kale, chard, broccoli, cabbages, radishes, carrots and turnips. The greens will be more prevalent as we get into September. The winter squash are coming along nicely too.
Sweet Italian red and yellow peppers are prevalent this week. If you have too many or want to save them for later use I suggest chopping and flash freezing them on a cookie tray then filling a quart freezer bag. I love using frozen peppers in my chili all winter long.
You will see leek again this week. Substitute leeks for onions in most recipes, it adds a slightly different flavor and different texture or chop and freeze them for potato leek soup this fall.
Bread this week will be a large loaf of Simple Country and the extra bread will be the Chocolate Chocolate Cherry.
Cheese will be smoked cheddar.
Fruit will be watermelon, honey dew or a tree fruit from Shaw Orchard.
It's the time of year where I start thinking ahead to 2021. Moms Market no longer wants us to offer extras for the shares picked up there. While I understand this, and will of course still offer a MOMs pick up, it's time to find another drop spot in our Hampden and Timonium/Towson areas. If any of you have any suggestions, would like to host a drop spot or know someone who does, please reach out to me. We will expand drop off days to Thursdays next year so we're looking to add a new drop spot or two either way. Please reach out with any suggestions as we shift our CSA to be more efficient and level our work load through out the week.
We couldn't do any of this without you. We appreciate your support, in all the ways you give it. Thank you and have a wonderful week.
