Farm Happenings for November 17, 2020

Posted on November 12th, 2020 by Lisa Duff

Yes, you guessed it-the farm chores lighten up a bit in November and there's more time to pose for photos around the farm! Above is the November crew (minus Annie who took the photo and works on Monday in the pack shed). There's Cat, Lisa, Alex and Jenna.

We finished planting our 100# of Certified Organic hardneck German White seed garlic from Ed Frasier. I always enjoy a late summer phone call with Ed. His solid upstate NY accent speaks to my childhood self growing up in central NY and warms my heart. Ed Frasier grows a LOT of garlic and I need to get my order in early. I trust you can attest to the quality product he provides us. The cloves must be broken apart, by hand, and it's a job I like to spread out over a few days for a few people. The hands get sore after wrestling with a hundred or so heads. We will mulch our garlic with straw harvested from our leased property on Freeland Road. In years past we have mulched with the leaves from the property but, as anyone coming to the farm lately can see, the leaf collector is currently out of commission so we haven't been able to pick up the leaves!

I want to share with you an exciting project we're working on for 2021. I have wrestled for years with how to best get food into the kitchens of our community, no matter what their financial ability. So this year we are launching. No more waiting until it is perfect. I've spent WAY too much time trying to get things perfect-we're jumping in and we want your help! Now more than ever I understand that my passion for growing food is about so much more than eating it. The passion is for sharing this food, this lifestyle and the community that we've built. The OSF mission is about education and community. And what I find every time I think I'm helping someone else...they're the ones who help me. It's like magic every time. You'll see this again but for today you're the first to see the first draft.

OSF gives back!
Our new Stand Alone Add-on shares allow you to donate $25, $50 or $100 towards helping a family in need secure fresh vegetables and become a part of our community. OSF will work with My Neighbor's Foundation and the Hereford Food Bank to identify families in need who want a CSA share but can't afford the up front cost. We will be instituting free classes on food preparation and storage, cooking and the health benefits of eating seasonally and locally. If you or any of your family members would like to help put together a class or help us in this new undertaking please reach out lisa@oakspring-farm.com

Yours in farming, in community, in hope and health!
