Week 20 Poblano Peppers are HERE

Posted on October 11th, 2024 by Lisa Duff

It's pepper week at OSF.

Get sweet green bell peppers, spicy jalapeno peppers or mildly spicy Poblano peppers this week.

Can't use them all this week?

Here’s a quick and easy guide to freezing peppers for later use:

Freezing Peppers Made Simple

Got extra peppers from this week’s share? Don’t let them go to waste—freeze them! It’s super easy and great for keeping that fresh flavor around all winter.

1. Wash & Dry: Rinse your peppers thoroughly and dry them completely.
2. Slice or Chop: Cut them into slices or chunks, depending on how you plan to use them later.
3. Flash Freeze: Spread the peppers in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze for 1-2 hours.
4. Bag & Store: Transfer the frozen peppers to an airtight freezer bag, label them, and pop them back in the freezer.

No blanching is needed. They’ll be ready to toss into soups, stir-fries, or fajitas whenever you need a quick burst of flavor.

This is what I do with all the ugly 'half bad' peppers left over from CSA lol! So easy to grab a quart bag from the freezer and use what I need for chili ALL winter long.

Poblano Peppers: The Nutritional Powerhouse

Poblanos are not only delicious but packed with nutrients. These mild peppers are rich in vitamins A and C, both of which are powerful antioxidants that support immune function and skin health. They’re also a good source of fiber, promoting digestive health, and contain potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure.

One of the best things about poblanos is their versatility. You can roast them and enjoy them simply sliced with other vegetables, or blend them into a super simple sauce for tacos, enchiladas, or even scrambled eggs. The mild heat of poblanos adds flavor without overpowering, making them a fantastic choice for those who want a little spice without going overboard.

As the weather cools and we settle into fall, there’s nothing quite like the comfort of a hearty, flavorful chili. This week, we’re sharing a recipe for Chicken Chili Verde, a dish that brings together fresh tomatillos, poblanos, and jalapeños for a perfect balance of heat, tang, and warmth.

Recipe: Chicken Chili Verde

We hope you enjoy making and eating this Chicken Chili Verde as much as we do. Be sure to grab your tomatillos, poblanos, and jalapeños this week!
