Tomato or not to Tomato - Farm Happenings for August 20, 2020

Posted on August 18th, 2020 by Liz Gorzo

Hello Everyone,

We are picking heirloom tomatoes everyday this week, we are getting calls every day for the Romas and San Marszanos for stewing and sauce making.  I love tomatoes, they are by far my favourite vegetable/fruit. Full of nutrients and so many ways to make them into tasty food.  I'm hoping you have enjoyed the extra tomatoes we have added to the bags the past couple of weeks.

On the farm this week we have seen how dangerous farming is and how fragile life is. The marsh has lost a 77 year old farmer/neighbour to an tragic accident. This farmer, in recent years grew lettuces, swiss chard, collards, herbs, kale and I am sure many other crops over the decades of his farming life.  It brings to mind the quote, "find a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life".

This week Nonna's breads are not available, the pizza dough and sauce is still on the list.  We will return to baked good options next week.

Our new 'Made in Ontario' good this week is J.T. Reid's Smoked Jalepeno and Bourbon micro batch Hot Sauce. J.T. is a young entrepreneur from Barrie, ON.  Last summer we won a basket full of his sauces at a Buck and Doe. We were hooked immediately.  Note: The heat is very mild in this sauce so not to worry if you don't like spicy, this one doesn't hurt... and it is so tasty, my husband I add it to almost everything.

Please Enjoy!
