Greetings from the farm! This is always a very crazy time of the season for us. We are busy picking summer crops and getting planted for the fall season in high heat days. We are about 75% finished planting and have more to do this week and the week after. The drought has really delayed some of our planting. The soil needs to be worked in order to plant and cannot do it when it is bone dry. Really praying for a storm to hit the farm so we can get ground ready to plant in. The dry weather is also stressful on the plants currently growing, but we have a strong well and can keep most of them watered with irrigation.
Lots of new items on the menu this week-including sweet corn! The corn is grown by Joe Delauter, who has worked for us on and off for a few years. His family has a small farm north of Thurmont. He brought some earlier this week for us to try and it is very sweet and fresh. He will be picking it in the morning before we pack shares so it is super fresh for you! We also got a big load of fruit from Catoctin Orchard this week-Peaches, Nectarines, Cantaloupes, Apples, Plums, and Pears. The quality of everything is excellent. They are all very sweet, firm, and fresh. I dug through a crate and found a ripe Harvest Queen Pear to eat on my drive back and it is the best tasting pear I have ever had. Their crop froze last season and were not available, boy am I glad they have them this year.
Our tomatoes are still doing very well, but will be slowing down over the next few weeks. If you would like to preserve any to enjoy during the winter-the time is now! We have them available in bulk for you at a great price.
Please be sure to scroll through all we have available and make adjustments to your share to get exactly what you want! So much great local produce available right now.
