Happy December

Posted on December 1st, 2020 by Bob Baker

Hello Members - Hope your Thanksgiving with family and friends was a good one!  I went to my daughter's in the morning and we enjoyed a cup of coffee and a couple of sweets - and then over to see my mom at the nursing home (she is 92 years young) - still not allowed in - so I stand outside her window and she on the inside - also sent her in a cup of coffee!   Very grateful to have that time with loved ones!

Activity at the Farm is taking place in two areas - the greenhouse and the small barn where we work on the equipment.  The greenhouse is getting a very thorough cleaning and sanitizing which includes the seeding trays.  If we don't clean and disinfect the trays -  and a small amount of soil remains it may contain a soil borne disease that attacks and kills the seedlings.  The good news is this is easily preventable.

First we remove as much soil as possible by using a small brush and if some still remains we soak in hot soapy water - next a rinse with the hose - and then a plunge into a weak bleach water solution for a few minutes - another rinse and then they are air dried.  This is not a small task - we have approximately 15,000 trays to disinfect.

In the small barn, the tractors hydraulic systems are being inspected and repaired if needed.  Seals, pumps, valves, filters, hose, clamps and oil are some of the components that may need to be replaced to ensure proper working of the system.  The hydraulic system provides the power to lift and lower implements that attach to the tractor.

Our first delivery of the winter share went very well.  Feedback we received indicated that people were pleased with the quality and amount they received in their share.  Our next winter share delivery will be Thursday, December 17 - and you may still sign up for a share.  Might even be a nice Christmas present!   Here is the link -    https://www.harvie.farm/signup/regional-food-bank-of-northeastern-new-york - Please contact me with any questions.

The link that follows will take you to a very informative page on Roasting Veggies - Roasting brings out the Vegetables' natural sugars and a deep flavor.

I have begun taking a walk each day - even if it is just a short one - maybe my lunch break - always beneficial for the body - it sure has been beneficial for my mind, spirit and emotions these days!!!

Very best, Bob
