What's happening on the farm this week?
As we talked about last week, the transition from spring to summer crops is in full swing as we watch each and every pepper and tomato plant for any signs of ripening or fruit set. Over the next few weeks there will be some cucumbers, zucchini, squash, and possibly eggplant and the first tomatoes trickling in the shares!
There are a couple crops we don't grow on our farm that we buy in from other farmer friends of ours a few times throughout the season. We will be buying green beans from Mark Roh at Abie Vegetable People and sweet corn from The Daniels Family at Daniels Produce. Neither of these growers are certified organic, but use the least amount of inputs possible in their production.
We have stopped growing green beans because they are an incredibly labor intensive crop - imagine all those hours picking beans for 200 families! Mark at Abie Farm can actually make money growing green beans because he owns a bean harvesting machine!
We tried sweet corn one year (some of you may remember) and it was ok, but to grow enough sweet corn you need quite a few acres set aside for only corn successions. This is one crop we may try to grow on our farm in the future, but since we don't have a lot of experience with it, this is one thing we will take our time on adding into our mix. Plus, the Daniels grow delicious sweet corn!
We hope you enjoy the tasty new potatoes in the share this week! This variety is Yukon Gold, a classic delicious, buttery, yellow potato.
Happy Eating!
