There was a bit of confusion last week, but CSA pick up starts at 4pm and ends at 6pm!
To the Members who showed up early to pick up, thank you for your patience as it was a mess in there!
~If you have a Bread Share, please note that you should use your bread within a couple days or freeze it until you are ready to eat it! This is a fresh bread with no added preservatives and is best eaten ASAP!~
This week is garlic planting week on the farm! This is the final outdoor planting of the season and a clear indicator each year that the season is over (sort of). Look for pictures on our Facebook and Instagram!
Garlic is relatively easy to grow and can be grown year-round in mild climates. Nearly all of the garlic in cultivation is grown by planting individual cloves in the ground as the seed. In colder climates (that's us!), cloves are planted in the autumn, about six weeks before the soil freezes, and harvested in late spring or early summer.
There are different varieties of garlic, most notably hardneck garlic and softneck garlic. The latitude where the garlic is grown affects the choice of type, as garlic can be day-length sensitive (just like onions!). Hardneck garlic is generally grown in cooler climates and produces relatively large cloves, whereas softneck garlic is generally grown closer to the equator and produces small, tightly-packed cloves. Hardneck garlic produces garlic scapes, which are removed to focus all the garlic's energy into bulb growth. The scapes can be eaten raw or cooked, as many of you learned this year!
If you are new to our CSA, welcome! We have a private Facebook Group for CSA Members only to share ideas and recipes and if you would like to request to join CLICK HERE. You can also like our Facebook Page or follow us on Instagram to see what we are up to on the farm!
Enjoy the share this week and as always, get in touch if you have any questions!
Happy Eating,
Chloe
