Farm Happenings for August 22, 2023

Posted on August 18th, 2023 by John Zilnicki

Well I just want to let you know all our rain dances from June have been answered.  The farm picked up another 3 inches of rain this week and well, we are good.  Luckily, we didn't get the big 4 inch rain like West Hampton as our farmer friends field just washed away down the road.  However, doing some test digs I am seeing major issues in our potato fields.  The potatoes can't handle the vast amounts of water and mix in with some disease I think came in and we might be looking at catastrophic problems down the road during harvest.  I hope my assumptions are wrong but it is setting up to put a nail in the coffin of the last remaining potato farmers left on Long Island.

On a better note, we are stocked with more cattle on the farm and they are absolutely loving the lush green pastures that don't normally exist on the farm in August.  With the rain we have record grass growth for this time of year.  Also, we are fully stocked with beef and highly recommend filling your freezer with some of the best grass fed beef around!

Once we get through Friday, the pattern shifts and we will have some absolutely dynomite weather, with Sun!

Your farmer,

John
