This week we begin the weekly squash series! We will be sending you all a different winter squash each week in your shares for the remainder of the Summer CSA season.
This week we will be highlighting the Kabocha squash! One of our personal favorites. We grew two types of Kabocha squash this season - Sunshine (orange) and Sweet Mama (green), so your share will contain one of those two varieties.
Kabocha squash is a Japanese winter squash and can be eaten many ways. It has a lovely sweet flavor and its texture and taste are something like a mix of a pumpkin and a sweet potato. It makes wonderful soups, is perfect for curries, and is also great just cut into wedges and roasted for a simple side. It is also used often as a tempura veggie in Japanese cooking - I am definitely going to try that one this year! Note- you can also eat the skin, so when I roast it in wedges I prefer to leave the skin on to give a bit of extra crisp texture.
We will be harvesting your squash this week. If you store them in a cool/dry spot they will last a few months, so you do not need to rush to eat them this week.
And finally I just want to invite you again to our annual CSA member winter squash harvest on Saturday October 1st!
We'll be harvesting all the rest of our winter squash and loading them up on the trailer for sale at the Harvest Celebration. And we would love to have you all join us for this, one of our favorite activities of the fall!
We will harvest from 9-11:30AM and then have a break before the Harvest Celebration festivities begin. Feel free to bring your own lunch to hang out until the event starts.
At the Harvest Celebration, after the squash harvest, you will have opportunities to stock up on winter squash and some other fall veggies, press cider, play games, eat some farm fresh pizza, listen to live music, take hayrides and more - it is our biggest event of the year!
Please sign up here if you plan to join us for the squash harvest so we know to expect you.
And please stick around afterwards for our annual Harvest Celebration learn more about that here: https://arocha.ca/event/annual-harvest-celebration/
Lastly a little *spoiler alert* we will be sending pumpkins in next weeks shares, so in case you are hoping to make some from-scratch pumpkin pies for your Thanksgiving/Friendsgiving celebrations we have you covered!
